In recent years, Mānuka honey has gained immense popularity worldwide, not only for its unique taste but also for its remarkable health benefits. However, with its rise in demand comes the risk of misrepresentation, counterfeits, and diluted products. As consumers, understanding the authenticity of Mānuka honey is paramount, and organisations like the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), the Unique Mānuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA), Mānuka South, and other dedicated New Zealand Mānuka honey producers play vital roles in this landscape.

The Essence of Mānuka Honey

Mānuka honey is produced from the nectar of the Mānuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium), native to New Zealand and parts of Australia. What sets Mānuka honey apart from regular honey is its unique antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, attributed to compounds called methylglyoxal (MGO), polyphenols, and flavonoids. This honey is not only a delicious natural sweetener but also a sought-after remedy for various health issues, including sore throats, digestive problems, and skin repair.

The Challenge of Authenticity

As the popularity of Mānuka honey has surged, so too have concerns regarding its authenticity. Numerous products on the market claim to be genuine Mānuka honey, but not all of them meet the stringent standards necessary to hold that title. Misinformation and lack of regulation can lead consumers to purchase products diluted with less potent substances or entirely different types of honey.

This is where organisations like MPI, the UMFHA, and Mānuka South come into play, implementing measures to ensure that consumers can trust the products they are purchasing.

MPI's Mānuka Honey Science Definition

An essential pillar in the authenticity of Mānuka honey is the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), which has published a science-based definition of Mānuka honey. This definition is designed to clarify the specific characteristics that qualify honey as authentic Mānuka honey. This definition is made up of a combination of 5 attributes (4 chemicals from nectar and 1 DNA marker from Mānuka pollen).

The MPI's rigorous scientific standards and testing protocols serve to protect both consumers and producers, ensuring that any product labelled as Mānuka honey meets the defined benchmarks for purity and efficacy. By providing a clear framework and supporting the UMFHA’s efforts, MPI strengthens the integrity of Mānuka honey in the worldwide market.

The Role of UMFHA

The Unique Mānuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA) is a pivotal organisation in the fight for authenticity and quality in the New Zealand Mānuka honey industry. Established in 1998, the UMFHA recognises and regulates the quality of Mānuka honey by setting standards that products must meet to claim certain characteristics or benefits.

One of the key aspects of the UMFHA's role is the UMF rating. This rating indicates the unique properties of Mānuka honey, including its non-peroxide antibacterial activity. To carry a UMF label, honey must be independently tested and meet specific criteria, ensuring that consumers are receiving genuine Mānuka honey with verified potency.

The UMFHA also engages in public education efforts, informing consumers about what to look for in authentic Mānuka honey, thus promoting informed purchasing decisions and minimising the impact of counterfeit products on the market.

Mānuka South, a Guardian of Mānuka Honey Quality

Mānuka South is dedicated to producing high-quality, authentic Mānuka honey that meets strict standards. As a brand, they prioritise transparency and traceability in their sourcing practices. By working directly with local beekeepers who adhere to sustainable practices, Mānuka South ensures that their honey is produced following the strict guidelines set out by the UMFHA.

The company's commitment doesn't stop at sourcing. They also invest in testing their products in accredited laboratories to verify the purity and authenticity of their honey. Mānuka South's grading system, including the identification of MGO and UMF (Unique Mānuka Factor), helps consumers make informed choices when selecting Mānuka honey.

To maintain the trust of customers overseas and in NZ, it is essential to be aware of authenticity issues in the market. Brands like Mānuka South and others such as Mānuka Health, Comvita, and Mānuka Doctor, in partnership with organisations such as the UMFHA and the MPI, are dedicated to maintaining the integrity, quality, and authenticity of Mānuka honey. This commitment to traceability, transparency, rigorous testing, and adherence to strict standards is a fundamental interest of all New Zealand Mānuka producers, packers, and exporters. Before purchasing a jar of Mānuka honey, you should check the label for quality and authenticity marks such as UMF and MGO ratings, and it is worthwhile to research the website of the producer as well. In a follow-up post, I will give you more clarity on the different Mānuka grading systems used in the market.
